Gears

Going back to work after lunch one day, with 15,000 miles on the gears............ I was Taking off from a stoplight when the truck hung like the emergency brake was on then a loud pop and bang-bang-bang. I pulled off into a parking lot to look under the truck, loud noises coming from the rear of the truck while moving. Either the Transfer case of rear-end. It was noisy, but still moved. After some thought and the fact that I was in a bad part of town to be stuck, I started off towards home.

After a slow/noisy drive home, I put the truck on jack stands and ran it at idle. It was still hard to tell which end of the driveshaft the noise was coming from, so I pulled the rear-end cover off.

Gear oil and bits of metal came out from the rear end. The ring gear looked banged up, and after spinning it over a couple of times, I saw the two missing teeth on the pinion gear.
